A great brush does more than just sweep product onto your face—it unlocks the full potential of your makeup. And believe it or not, the type of bristle you choose has the biggest impact on your final look!
Today, we’re going to break down every single type of bristle so you can find "The One" that fits your routine perfectly.
Generally, bristles are split into two main worlds: Natural Hair and Synthetic Hair. Let’s dive deep into the natural hair universe first to see who they are best for!
1. Goat Hair 🐐
This is the absolute most popular choice for makeup brushes! Why? Because it delivers incredible color payoff and makes pigments pop. It’s perfect for blush, powder, eyeshadow, contour, and highlighter.
Goat hair is categorized by the part of the goat it comes from, with the softest being from the chest (mostly imported from Japan and China). Here they are, ranked from softest to coarsest:
- 1.1 Saibikoho: Harvested from the chest. This is the holy grail—the absolute softest, rarest, and most expensive goat hair available. (Some makeup lovers even say it feels softer than squirrel hair!)
- 1.2 Saikoho: Also from the chest, offering a super light and airy feel on the skin. Commonly found in China and Japan, these bristles are usually white. (Fun fact: If you see our S series brushes with a code starting with "3", they belong to this premium group!).
- 1.3 Sokoho: From the chest, but often dyed black to distinguish its grade. This is a high-grade goat hair favored by luxury counter brands because it strikes the perfect balance between softness and durability. (Our original S series with codes starting with "1" use this grade!).
- 1.4 Hakutotsuho: Taken from the back and belly. The hairs are shorter and offer moderate softness. This type is great for dense brushes like foundation or facial cleansing brushes.
- 1.5 Otosuho: Harvested from the shoulders or front legs. This is a lower-quality hair often used to keep brush costs budget-friendly.
2. Pony Hair 🐴
Made from pony hair, these bristles sport a natural brownish color. They deliver a rich color payoff similar to goat hair but come at a much friendlier price point. However, pony hair can snap easily, so it’s usually blended with other hair types or used for smaller, short-bristled brushes like eyeshadow and eyeliner brushes.
3. Badger Hair 🦡
As the name suggests, this comes from badgers! Its defining feature is a stiff root paired with a softer tip, giving you incredibly sharp, clean lines. The unique texture makes it a dream to control, allowing it to "grab" color beautifully.
🎯 Must-have for: Eyebrow brushes!
4. The Weasel Family (Mustela) 🦦
A quick fun fact: Weasels and mongooses look alike, but they are actually different species!
Brushes in this family are your absolute best friends for cream-based makeup (think foundation, concealer, and lipstick) because the hairs are incredibly sleek and smooth.
- 4.1 Sable Hair: This hair is rare and quite pricey, so it's usually reserved for smaller brushes meant for cream or wet products. The bristles hold onto liquid and release it onto your skin beautifully and evenly. Harvested from the tail, it's also known as Kolinsky.
- The ultimate grade: Male sable hair harvested during the winter (which explains why it’s so rare and expensive!). Amazing for eyeshadow, lips, and concealer.
- 4.2 Weasel Hair: Very similar to Sable, but the hairs are shorter and more affordable. It works wonders for lip, concealer, and foundation brushes. While it shines with wet products, it can handle powder makeup too, giving you great color payoff.
5. Silver Fox Hair 🦊
The exciting newcomer in the high-end makeup world! Originally a byproduct of the garment industry, these bristles are round, incredibly bouncy, and silky smooth from root to tip. It gives you a unique, premium sensation that is both silky-soft yet firm.
It picks up a moderate amount of pigment—not too sheer, not too heavy.
⚠️ Note: This luxurious hair is strictly for dry powder products only!
Think of it as having the softness of a squirrel, the silkiness of a sable, and the color-grabbing power of a goat/grey squirrel hybrid. Truly one of a kind!
6. Squirrel Hair 🐿️
This is officially the softest hair type you can buy, making it pricier than the rest (plus, many countries have now banned squirrel farming).
Overall, squirrel hair is strictly meant for dry powder products. Because the hairs are so fine and lightweight, they will clump up and ruin your look if you use them with wet creams or liquids. A golden rule for squirrel hair: The softer the hair, the sheerer the color payoff (which makes it absolutely perfect for a soft, diffused, airbrushed blend!).
- 6.1 Blue Squirrel: A brownish-grey hair that is the softest of them all. It feels like a total cloud on your skin, but it picks up less color. It’s highly prized (and highly priced!) for powder, blush, and highlight brushes.
- 6.2 Pine Squirrel: Comes in yellow and white varieties. It grabs color a bit better and is just a tiny bit less soft than the Blue Squirrel. Great for eyeshadow, blush, and contour.
🌿 Love the sound of squirrel hair but want to keep it animal-free? Our BRUSH STUDIO "To Go" series features top-grade synthetic fibers that mimic that exact squirrel-soft feel. They are 100% vegan and cruelty-free!
7. Synthetic Hair
Synthetic brushes were originally created as a budget-friendly, cruelty-free alternative with consistent quality. Fast forward to today, and tech has advanced so much that top-tier synthetic brushes feel almost identical to natural hair! They are now a staple for both beginners and pro makeup artists.
But here is a insider secret: Not all synthetic brushes are made equal. They are actually engineered into two different fiber textures depending on what you need them to do:
7.1 Straight Synthetic Fiber
The strands are perfectly smooth and straight from top to bottom. Because they have no texture, they don't absorb your products, allowing them to lay down maximum product directly onto your skin.
- Best for: Cream or liquid makeup (foundations, concealers, liquid blushes).
- The Vibe: When you need absolute smoothness and precision.
7.2 Wavy Synthetic Fiber
These strands are engineered with micro-crimping or tiny waves to mimic the natural texture of animal hair. This added texture allows the brush to "trap" and hold onto powder pigments beautifully.
- Best for: Powder makeup (setting powders, powder blush, bronzer, eyeshadows).
- The Vibe: When you want effortless blending and a soft, diffused finish.
